Derek J. Turner and his forays into ‘House Music’
House music is a genre of electronic music, which emerged from Chicago USA in the early 1980’s. House music was generally characterized by repetitive 4/4 beats, rhythms provided by drum machines, off-beat hi-hat cymbals, and synthesized bass-lines. The mechanical, repetitive rhythm of house was one of its main features, vocals and lyrics were optional. However, Derek’s experiences as a recording & touring musician have embellished his pallet, and his compositions often include many more passages, key changes, and structural exploration than you might expect to encounter from a generic house track.
In today’s world of clinical digital sounds and “entire song done in the box”, Derek’s prefers the imperfection and warm tones that emerge from physical synthesizers & romplers - mostly from the 90’s era. His ‘Quarterpipe Studio’ is constantly evolving, but is based around the Moog Voyager XL.
2019 has seen Derek's tracks included on several international compilation releases, some support from local radio stations, scoring a remix for Lauren Neko, and becoming a key player with the Sydney Music Producers' collective which now runs regular showcase events for emerging local talent.
Increasingly, Derek is finding opportunities to perform his original releases - either as a DJ set, or a more hybrid / live set up. and the flow of constant quality releases shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon.
