RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY PRESENTS
PEANUT BUTTER WOLF (Stones Throw Records)
Twelve months after kicking off with original NWA member Arabian Prince, the Red Bull Music Academy’s monthly Club Night series celebrates its first anniversary with DJ/producer Peanut Butter Wolf at the controls.
The Stones Throw Records head honcho has been bringing cutting-edge hip-hop and assorted leftfield curiosities to the world since 1996. While the man born Chris Manak launched the label so he and MC Charizma could release their now classic debut LP, he’s since introduced future stars Aloe Blacc, Mayer Hawthorne, Madlib, J Dilla, J Rocc and more over the course of 200 releases. Key releases over the past 12 months include Snoop Dogg’s return to form alongside Dâm-Funk as 7 Days Of Funk, and The Stepkids’ second LP of psychedelic soul.
PBW and Stones Throw have recently been recognised by the acclaimed documentary Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton: This Is Stones Throw Records, a film featuring insight from Kanye West, Mike D and Tyler, the Creator on the label’s output and legacy. Manak continues to push the label forward while sharing his exquisite music taste with the dancefloors of the world, even showing off the diversity of his vinyl collection with a 12-hour set for Boiler Room in January 2013.
The vinyl will be staying at home, but Peanut Butter Wolf will be starting the party regardless when he hits Australia for Red Bull Music Academy in July. Melbourne producer Kirkis will be launching his new single in live mode at both club dates before joining PBW at the RBMA Stage at Splendour in the Grass. Catch them at Goodgod Small Club (Sydney) on Thursday 17 July with support from Mako (RBMA Rome 2004), or Saturday 19 July at Boney (Melbourne), backed up Kano (RBMA Rome 2004) and DJ Susan (aka Sui Zhen, RBMA London 2010).
RSVP for free entry is essential, though entry is on a first come, first served basis. Being fashionably late isn’t cool if you miss your spot on the RBMA dancefloor.
