Alt-pop act Bad Weather (Boorloo/Perth) have announced the forthcoming release of their long awaited new single, Lilac, due out Thursday September 21.
This single follows their debut EP, Flowers In Your Room (2022), which received rave reviews from Music Feeds, Milky, Good Call Live, and Backseat Mafia, who described the title track as "Indelible anthemic thunder with a yearning melancholia: the perfect ingredients for a perfect pop song."
The very same track, as well as another single from the EP titled Who Do You Wanna Be? Were both played across triple j Unearthed, 4ZZZ, Fremantle Radio, and RTRFM 92.1.
Bad Weather may be a contemporary pop band but their sound is a fused crossover of genres, influenced by the likes of 80s icons Prince, Michael Jackson and Talking Heads and 90s electronic moguls M83, with a modern twist guided by their love of bands like The 1975, Beabadoobea and James Ivy.
Bad Weather have worked with producers Mark McEwen & Brody Simpson of Underground Recording Studio (Roger Waters, Karnivool, Drapht) on their most recent EP, and Michael Bono (Avril Lavigne, Blink 182) on all releases before that. This next release is Bad Weather’s first time delving into the world of DIY, having recorded and mixed everything themselves (except vocals, recorded by Michael Bono), and demonstrates bands diverse ability to not only write exceptional songs, but also to produce them.
Callum Robertson (singer/songwriter/producer) describes the song as “feeling lost and then finding some purpose through someone else, who adds a bit of colour to your life. Being with that person you feel safe, at peace, even if everything else in life is a bit of a whirlwind, that person makes you feel settled and still.”
“In this particular situation I lost that person, that comfort, that colour. Life kind of went back to being a bit black and white… I was a bit detached from reality. The reality being that no one else is going to be that peace for you, you need to find it within yourself.”
Lilac is out on all platforms on Thursday September 21. Bad Weather will be performing live at Rosemount Hotel (Four5nine Bar) on Saturday September 23 to celebrate the release.
