Bad Weather may have only been on the scene for the best part of a year but this alt-pop act, lead by songwriter and producer Callum Robertson, is already making some serious impressions. Despite being early days, rocking up to a Bad Weather gig in their hometown of Perth means finding a room full of loyal fans passionately singing along to the five singles the act has released in just 18 months.

With influences ranging from Michael Jackson, to M83, to Bon Iver and The 1975, Bad Weather present a sound reminiscent of an 80’s movie soundtrack crossed with indie-emo vocals; a combination that has them pinned as one of the “rising names” of acts in this genre to come out of Australia, according to triple j presenter Dave Ruby-Howe on Twitter.

Bad Weather’s single ‘Teenagers in Love’ saw considerable praise from triple j presenters and received airplay on triple j Unearthed, as did their most recent single ‘All I Know’, of which triple j’s Pip Rasmussen says, “Bad Weather making some primo indie pop that feels so genuine, talking about connecting and watching life through our screens”.

Today Bad Weather announce the forthcoming release of their huge new tune, ‘Caring Is Cool’, a breakup song with a tender message, delivered via a lush blend of acoustic and electronic hooks. “It’s about a lot of different things”, says Callum, “I had a conversation with someone at one of my shows about their experience with a breakup. While our experiences were very different, I think I found solace in hearing someone else’s story and being on the other side.”

In part a personal reflection on the end of a relationship, Callum also sees the track as a wider comment on the importance of kindness in a world that seems increasingly volatile, “I think nowadays it’s so easy to forget to do the small things in life that don’t cost anything. Life is so fast paced and with this song I wanted to highlight that and remind people that the act of caring, listening and supporting people is really important!’”

Not only is the act releasing a new single, but there’s a music video to come too! Lucky ticket holders will be able to preview the video for the first time on Saturday July 31 at the Caring is Cool single launch at Four5Nine Bar in the iconic Rosemount Hotel. Support on the night comes from Didion’s Bible, King Blue & Gloss. Tickets are just $10 and are on sale now through Oztix.

'Caring is Cool' is out Friday July 16 on all streaming platforms.
