Ben’s foray into all things French began with a poignant request to sing a French song for his grandfather on Bastille day 14th July 2002. An acrobatic appearance in the Baz Luhrmann film “Moulin Rouge”, two years living in French speaking Switzerland, and performing in Paris developed his language skills and led ultimately to the first invitation to an Australian to sing at the 2011 Paris Burlesque Festival. His return saw the creation of a highly acclaimed semi-biographical production - Parisian Rendezvous, with guest performers including flautiste Jane Rutter and dancer Shay Stafford from the Moulin Rouge. Also starring Wendy Lee Taylor from the Lido de Paris and Melbourne tap dancer Winston Morrison among others, Parisian Rendezvous and was performed in Melbourne and Sydney – notably at the Basement and Camelot Lounge. The spin-off Paris Adventure was staged for the Anywhere Festival. Ben also appeared as the French love interest in Shay Stafford’s autobiographical show ‘Memoirs of a Showgirl.”
Ben Noir presents French chanson in the style of the crooners but with the theatrical twist of a unique flute voice extension to rival the most daring sopranos! Ben has been described as ‘extraordinary and amazing’ for his vocal range and is an engaging, sensitive and entertaining performer. His solo act won best performance at the 2016 Short and Sweet festival and he will be returning from performing in Montreal Oct 2016 for the release of his recording.
This concert is co-ordinated with the release of his recording “BEN NOIR” and he will be accompanied superbly by the musicians who played in his show and on the album. Accordionist extra-ordinaire Paolo Campanari–Brancondi saw Ben performing at the Winter Magic Festival in 2014 and introduced himself. Piano accordion was just the instrument Ben was looking for and they have been performing all over Sydney ever since- including the French Film Festival, the BBR festival, the Anywhere Festival 2015. Band members: Inge Courtney Haentjes- violin, Jane Andino – piano, Paul Laszlo – double bass/banjo, Ann Palumbo – arranger, guitar/mandolin/double bass, have worked together in many projects including Tangocentrics, Alturas, The Laszlo Ensemble, choral projects as well as the jazz/French chanson genre.
