While the lyrics often deal with personal adversity, the music itself goes far beyond self-pity and discomfort. The blues is about overcoming hard luck, saying what you feel, ridding yourself of frustration, letting your hair down, and simply having fun. The Roaring 20s were the times of the blues – life was tough! Bluesmen left the plantations, juke joints, and rambling shacks of the Deep South and headed into the big cities.
