Fifty years ago, an 18-year-old Jamaican-American named DJ Kool Herc invented hip hop music by combining instrumental sections, or 'breaks', to accompany his friend Coke La Rock who hyped up the crowd on microphone. This innovation created a new genre of electronic dance music that has proliferated into sub-genres such as drum and bass, breakbeat, jungle, house, and techno, and many more. Featuring some giants of Australian Hip Hop performing alongside Composition and Music Technology students with students from Contemporary Music this concert celebrates this revolutionary movement in an evening of electronic dance music of all flavours.
