‘The Blarney Pilgrims’
When Chris recorded her album of Henry Lawson songs, ‘Rain in the Mountains’ in 2012, she asked Jim if he would play guitar on one of the tracks. Jim turned up, armed with two guitars, ukulele and omnichord, and added some unique magic to several tracks. The quid pro quo was Chris showing up at Jim’s studio to put some whistle parts down on the debut album from Jim’s Irish band Shameless Seamus and the Tullamore Dews, ‘Ballroom of Romance’. So began a musical relationship based on a shared love of the strong traditions of Irish music.
Born in Co Cork, Ireland, Evelyn is a master of traditional Irish music and a dervish on the fiddle. Evelyn is also a fine singer and a core member of Shameless Seamus. Since moving to Australia 20+ years ago she has played with many of the best Sydney based Irish bands, including Claddagh with Jimmy Moore, Spud, Irish Hooley and Paddy on Ice.
Jim is a founding member, guitarist, keyboardist and songwriter for Midnight Oil. He has performed, produced and recorded with many great Australian acts including silverchair, Sarah Blasko, Kasey Chambers, Neil Murray and Neil Finn. He is a prolific composer and songwriter whose projects include his Electric Guitar Orchestra, solo albums, playing with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and festival favourites The Break.
Evelyn and Jim also perform together in a smaller group called The Tinkers, with Alan Healy (guitar, bouzouki, bodhran). They toured Ireland together and performed with acclaimed singer songwriter Declan O’Rourke. Jim’s Irish heritage has taken a front seat in the years between Midnight Oil gigs, manifesting in his love of traditional Irish songs and tunes.
Chris’ classic folk-style singing evokes comparisons with Maddy Prior and Joan Baez. She has performed at most major Australian folk festivals including the National, Port Fairy and Blue Mountains, and with Australian and international acts including Albert Lee, Alistair Hulett, Andy Irvine and Spanish Asturian band Felpeyu. She is also an occasional member of The Tinkers and Shameless Seamus.
