'This is the one he's been working towards. This is the one where the violin sound flows like thickened cream; where the programmatic ideas and the purely musical ones are in complete accord..' - John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald, 26. July 2019

'Szolnok' is an album that was recorded with and traces in music the true story of Daniel Weltlinger's grandfather's violin from Szolnok that was carried by foot from Hungary to France between 1920-1922.

The violin was literally carried across the entire globe - from Budapest to Vienna to Marseilles to Casablanca to Sydney to Berlin - and the album consists of a mix of mostly original material mixing jazz, classical, folk and free improvised music influences as well as songs that Weltlinger's grandfather played on the violin.

The album follows the historical line of this instrument and it's whereabouts until the present day, and represents a story about time, continuity and most importantly about moving forward. It is a story for the ages.

“It is impossible to overstate the charm of this album. In every sense of the word it is a fabulous music journey. The violin sings in the hands of Daniel Weltlinger like no other..” - Peter Winkler, The Music Trust, 28. July 2019

Berlin-based violinist and composer-producer Daniel Weltlinger presents his critically acclaimed new album release 'Szolnok' along with Zohar's Nigun (Daniel Pliner - piano, Simon Milman - bass, Robbie Avenaim - drums/percussion). The remarkable true story of Weltlinger's grandfather's violin from Szolnok, that was carried around the world from Budapest to Vienna to Marseilles to Casablanca to Sydney to Berlin and beyond.

'Zohar's Nigun is composed of four gents who not only ply their instruments in a rather unique exposition of traditional and modern modes but who also explore the ethnic and cultural wherewithal which, in this case, generated the Jewish/Yiddish tradition. The Four Questons is in fact the most progressive application of distinctly Yiddish style I've ever heard, yet, while spinning the ancient mode out to its farthest reaches, they also manage to preserve its essence and, in doing so, pay lavish tribute to the genius underlying.' - Mark S. Tucker – FAME review

Berlin-based violinist and composer-producer Daniel Weltlinger presents his critically acclaimed new album release 'Szolnok' along with Zohar's Nigun (Daniel Pliner - piano, Simon Milman - bass, Robbie Avenaim - drums/percussion). Szolnok - released on the 3rd of May, 2019 on DMG Germany and Rectify Records - tells the story of Weltlinger’s violin from Szolnok that he inherited from his Hungarian born grandfather, who had carried this instrument with him when he walked between 1920-1922 by foot from Hungary to France. The violin survived being carried to the far reaches of the globe, and was brought back to Europe in late 2017 after some 75 years absence from the continent. This highly unusual and deeply personal album, recorded at Blackbird Studios in Berlin, mixes elements of jazz, free improvisation, Classical and folk influences, as well as songs Weltlinger’s grandfather performed on the violin. The album follows the historical line of this instrument itself and it's whereabouts until the present day, and represents a story about time, continuity and most importantly about moving forward.

Widely acclaimed for his distinctive warm sound and innovations within the genres of Gypsy-swing, jazz, Yiddish-klezmer and experimental/free-improvised music, Daniel Weltlinger has performed and recorded in Australia, Europe, China, Morocco, Turkey, the US and Israel, and regularly collaborates with many renowned artists and ensembles including German-Sinti guitarist and composer Lulo Reinhardt along with members of the Reinhardt family based in Koblenz/Rheinland Pfalz, Berlin based Yiddish singer/actor Karsten Troyke, the multi-ARIA Award-winning Gyp-rock band Monsieur Camembert and the Turkish-Classical Ensemble Olivinn amongst many others. He runs the independent record label Rectify Records, which produced the album ‘Koblenz’ nominated as amongst one of the best albums of 2015 in Downbeat Magazine, which also produced the widely acclaimed album 'The Four Questions' by Zohar's Nigun released in 2012. Zohar's Nigun is an experimental-chamber-jazz project that explores the very essence of the complicated and fractured nature behind what shapes identity in the 21st Century using the analogy of four musicians of Jewish heritage who mix both original and traditional music to explore these concepts. Shalom!

'It is no surprise that Daniel Weltlinger’s highly developed musicianship and beautifully warm violin tone are now in demand in international projects at the highest level.'
Peter Winkler - Music Trust Online, April 2, 2017

'music transcends boundaries'
Koblenz, Downbeat Best Albums of 2015

Of French-Austro-Hungarian-Israeli family background, the critically acclaimed Sydney-born/Berlin-based violinist and composer-producer Daniel Weltlinger has long been renowned worldwide for his distinctive warm sound and innovations within the genres of Gypsy-swing, jazz, klezmer and experimental/free-improvised music. He is frequently in demand as a solo recording/performance artist, often in collaboration with an array of top musicians and ensembles in a variety of different formats, and is highly sought after for his technical and musical mastery on his main instrument. A graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, he has performed and recorded in countless major concert halls, theatres, clubs and festivals across Australia, Europe, China, Morocco, Turkey, the US and Israel, and continues to collaborate with a wide range of renowned artists and ensembles including German-Sinti guitarist and composer Lulo Reinhardt, Berlin based Yiddish singer/actor Karsten Troyke, Polish-Australian chanteur Nadya Golski, the Australian multi-ARIA Award-winning Gyp-rock band Monsieur Camembert, the Berlin based Turkish-Classical Ensemble Olivinn and Danish bass player Kenneth Dahl Knudsen amongst many others. He runs the independent record label Rectify Records, which produced the album ‘Koblenz’ nominated as amongst one of the best albums of 2015 in Downbeat Magazine, and in addition to leading various combinations under his own name co-leads a number of ensembles including Gypsy-jazz collective 'Radio Django' with guitarist Janko Lauenberger, Hungarian Folk-experimental duo 'The Huns' with bassist/multi instrumentalist Taylor Savvy, as well as two Australian based contemporary music projects ‘Zohar’s Nigun’ and ‘The Asthmatix’ with long-time associate keyboardist Daniel Pliner, which fuse Jewish music within the respective contemporary frameworks of jazz and electronica/hip-hop.

Weltlinger's unique sound has been regularly featured on radio and television worldwide and featured most recently on the award winning soundtrack composed by Nikko Weidemann and Mario Kamien for 'Babylon Berlin' - a two-season 16-episode crime series directed by Tom Tykwer, Achim von Borries and Henk Handloegten which premiered in October 2017 on the Sky Television Network. Further film, documentary and theatre soundtrack credentials have included amongst others ‘Love My Way’ (Stephen Rae), ‘The Underpants’ (Alan John), ‘Uncle Chatzkel’ (Guy Gross), ‘Peking To Paris’ (Roger Mason), ‘The Cat That Walked By Himself’ (Peter Winkler) and ‘Meet The Waks Family’ (Neill Duncan). Weltlinger is endorsed by a number of top international companies and benefited in 2010-2017 from the support of BNP Paribas in Australia and the BNP Paribas Foundation in Paris for the development of a trilogy of recordings - 'Souvenirs' (2011), ‘Koblenz’ (2014) and 'Samoreau' (2017) - in which he wrote original music and arrangements inspired by the music of the Belgian born Manouche guitarist-composer Django Reinhardt. He has further ongoing sponsorships with the Danish microphone manufacturer DPA microphones, US string instrument manufacturer Saga instruments as well as the Scottish acoustic amplification and electric violin manufacturer Skyinbow acoustic pickups, and is a co-composer with Australian producer-composer Bruce Maginnis for the international production music library houses Audio Network, Fable, Cavendish Music, Intervox and Focus Music.

'Sydney born, Berlin based violinist and composer Daniel Weltlinger concludes his trilogy of recordings with his latest release: Samoreau. The album follows his critically acclaimed Souvenirs (2011), and Koblenz (2014) albums and completes his trilogy dedicated to the legendary gypsy guitarist, Django Reinhardt, who in the 1930’s pioneered the musical style Manouche which still resonates with audiences around the world today. Weltlinger shines on his violin on the eleven originals and is joined by Django’s grand nephew, acclaimed guitarist Lulo Reinhardt as well as four of Lulo’s nephews who are also guitarists. Winfried Schuld plays accordion on two tracks and piano on one with superb finesse adding to the guitarists essential Eastern European flourish with plenty of Gypsy swing. The album is named after the town near where the annual Festival Django Reinhardt is celebrated each year at Samois-sur-Seine, France. The festival began as a one night concert in 1968 and expanded to a week-long event in 1983. Weltlinger first attended the event in 2004 and formed a close bond with many of the people from across Europe that attend the Festival. Some of the outstanding tracks are Waterlilies, a direct allusion to the Django composition Nympheas, Samois, a tribute to the legendary festival town and Ghosts, which alludes to wars and conflicts both past and present. Another track La Femme Sophistiquee features Lulo and Weltlinger at their finest and showcases them as masters of their craft and instruments painted with the shades of the all time greats, Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt.'
