elephino ( ell-if-EYE-know ) noun:
What you get when you cross an elephant and a rhino;
The answer to all of life's questions except for those questions whose answer is 42;
Mostly instrumental funk improv from Santa Cruz, CA
Way back when (in the early 2000's) an organ-based trio rose up out of the steaming pile of Santa Cruz-based bands to bring a new answer to the question "who the hell are these guys?".
No one knew and the rest is history.
With Nick Chargin on keyboards (Blissninnies, the Houserockers, Corduroy Jim, Stinkfoot Orchestra), Pete Novembre on bass (Om Trio, Aza, Cosmic Pinball) and Bret Bailey on drums (Cosmic Pinball, Shady Groove, Blissninnies), the ensemble managed to move and groove the good people of the Bay Area for a couple years - disappearing almost as quickly as they had apparated leaving many to wonder what became of them. The answer to that question still lingers, and every few years the fabled beast known as the elephino pops up for a surprise visit leaving destruction, confusion and the faint smell of smoldering ferrets in its wake. Friday, March 10th will be one of those rare opportunities as they gather for a reunion at the Art Boutiki in San Jose.
Fraction Distraction is an instrumental psych rock trio with improv tendencies that includes two of Art Boutiki's most respected engineers.
Typically on sound and lights, Jason and Bill will be featured on drums and bass, respectively. Joining them on guitar is Iain Haworth, another well loved South Bay musician and sound engineer.
Come check out the other side of the Boutiki crew that you already know and love!
Headlining the night will be Elephino, a keyboard lead trio reminiscent of Medeski Martin and Wood featuring Nick Charigin on keys and vocals (House rockers and Stinkfoot orchestra), Pete Novembre on bass and Bret Bailey on drums.
$15 all ages.
