Highly respected musicians James Greening (trombone, pocket trumpet) and Gary Daley (piano, accordion) collaborate as a compelling duo, blending original compositions with elements of classical music, jazz, and improvisation.
After decades as sought-after sidemen—most notably in projects such as The Catholics—and as leaders of their own acclaimed ensembles, Greening and Daley have discovered a deep creative joy in making music together. The duo format, one of the most exposed and intimate settings in performance, allows both musicians to embrace freedom, transparency, and spontaneous interaction fully.
Their musical dialogue is centred on connection, unmasking, and shared exploration, creating performances that are both deeply personal and richly engaging. Audiences respond with consistent enthusiasm to the duo’s finely balanced interplay and emotional depth.
James Greening’s extensive performing and recording career places him among Australia’s most respected contemporary musicians. Critic John Shand wrote, “Greening’s trombone has the delicious plumpness of a ripe mango. The sad bits and the funny bits become jumbled, and there can be no higher praise.”
Gary Daley’s playing has likewise been described as “exquisite” by Shand, while his large-ensemble composition Sanctuary prompted Australianjazz.net’s John Hardaker to observe, “Music such as this can knock the wind out of my diaphragm, simply by reminding me how far the word falls short of the music.”
