/ HONEY HIVE /
Honey Hive are Blue Mountains locals, vocalist Kristina Frazer and guitarist Karl Javernig. The name comes from a line from the poem “Waipounamu” by Poet Laureate David Eggleton “the honeyed heart of the hive”. Kristina and Karl’s first-ever meeting was for a very short-notice gig in the Blue Mountains. A musical simpatico was clear from the start, as each song came out with ease and certainty, with everybody smiling and feeling they were listening to musicians who had been playing together for years.
Honey Hive plays jazz. It is not the hard-to-listen-to type that can be a test of endurance for the listener, but a style that is steeped in the craft of songwriting. Songs by the great jazz composers of their day: Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Richard Rogers and Hoagy Carmichael, to name but a few. Kristina sings these songs how they were meant to be sung, with wit, charm, and a crystal clear, natural delivery that gives these magnificent songs the absolute credit they deserve. Karl accompanies on guitar with a unique style that is all his own. His carefully considered fingerstyle approach to playing has a lyricism that can always tease something special from these songs. It’s the perfect foil to Kristina’s beautiful voice.
