Energetic, brilliant and playful, Spyglass Gypsies present a modern take on the traditional gypsy jazz style. Combining French gypsy songs with swinging originals the ensemble brings the bygone days of bohemian Paris into the present day with the lyrical sounds of the accordion, clarinet and the percussive 'la pompe' of gypsy guitars.
The Spyglass Gypsies launched their debut self-titled album of original music to a full house in February 2014, and in 2015 as Australian Arts Council grant recipients took their music to all corners of the country with their national tour. Established in 2010 by Ashby and Palmeiro, the group formed through studying and performing together in various jazz projects. They have appeared at many notable venues and festivals, among these a headlining performance at the 2013 Oz Manouche Gypsy Jazz Festival (Brisbane), the 2014 Red Earth Festival in Karratha, and in 2015 they performed at the Ellington Jazz Club in Perth with luminary Hank Marvin as their special guest. Along with supporting performances for international stars such as Dutch guitar virtuoso Lollo Meier, UK guitarist Remi Harris and most recently Portuguese fado star Ana Moura at the Enmore Theatre, Spyglass Gypsies have established themselves as one of the leading ensembles in Australasian Gypsy Jazz.
"Technically excellent, the performers were tight and expressive"
The West Australian.
"The French phrase 'joie de vivre' - literally 'joy of living' - is all over this music, infectious and grin-inducing"
John Hardaker, Orange Press.
This will be an Intimate Night in the Sisters Blue Restaurant. It's a small room by typical music venue standards - don't expect big crowds! Think good food, good wine (and beer and cocktails of course) and great music! This is a casual night and a great opportunity to get up close with world-class musicians. Enjoy a two-course dinner with the show for $59 (refer to hotelblue.com.au for the menu) or see the show only for $25. Even if you book the show only (without the dinner), you will be seated at a table and a casual bar menu will be available on the night, so you can still order a meal or something to nibble on. And don't forget - if you're bringing some friends, just let us know so we can seat you together.
