Discoveries of the American Scientific | The Mercury Transit | An Electronic Alternative Indie Rock Concert

Discoveries of the American Scientific is an electronic indie-rock band from Chicago, Illinois. Joseph Wood is the primary song-writer of the group and has been writing songs his whole life. Growing up in Chicago helped to form Joe’s melodic and working-class sensibilities. Playing in the Chicago music scene in the later 1990s and 2000s helped to hone his song-writing ability and musicianship. He has opened for national acts such as World Party, Beck, Joan of Arc, The Sea and Cake, Wilco, Jimmy Eat World, The Coctails, Pinebender, Yo La Tengo, Mavis Staples, Dr. Dog, Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes, and OAR.

In 2016, Discoveries released the “The Mercury Transit”, a collection of songs taken and written from a notebook diary that had been fatefully given to him by a girl named Gracie, whom he had given a ride to Chicago in 2003. As fate would have it, Joe would be one of the last people who would know Gracie in this life, as it was abruptly cut short shortly soon after they met. This collection of songs and lyrics taken from this notebook deals with life’s eternal questions and longing for something more.

Discoveries began recording this record with Jamie Wagner at Strobe Studios in Chicago with drummer and longtime friend Brian St. Clair (Local H, Triple Fast Action and ROTA). This record received a warm reception and was voted by Paste Magazine’s and Daytrotter’s one of the best independent releases of 2016. Currently, Discoveries is working on a new record with producer Doug McBride (Verruca Salt, Fall Out Boy) slated for release in June of 2019.
