The Yellow Sign Theatre (YST) is a small Baltimore theatre company dedicated to preserving and reviving older forms of popular culture and exploring ways that "low art" (genre film and fiction, carnival, variety entertainment, etc) can be used to communicate meaningful ideas.

YST is proud to present a recreation of the 1954 Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of The Day the Earth Stood Still, featuring a full suite of practical radio sound effects performed live.

The Day the Earth Stood Still is a classic science fiction film directed by Robert Wise and released in 1951. The film focuses on themes of political conflict and paranoia on the occasion of humanity's first contact with alien intelligence.

In the era before streaming services, DVDs, and other home media, films were unavailable to the public after the end of their theatrical run. Radio adaptations (usually with the films' original cast) provided the only opportunity to experience films that people either loved or missed seeing.

This piece was originally performed in May 2017 for the Maryland Film Festival and is the third in YST's series of classic radio revivals (after The Third Man and The War of the Worlds) directed by YST founder/artistic director Craig Coletta.
