/ FOLKSY DREAMS VOL 2 /
Folksy Dreams Vol 2 is a whimsical collection of instrumental pieces elegantly crafted by The Emerald Ruby, a multidisciplinary creative and disability advocate. Written and recorded in her home studio during the 2021 lockdown, this four-track EP is a calming response to the Covid chaos, set to transport the listener to a dreamy, glittery forest. This much-awaited sequel to Folksy Dreams Vol 1 incorporates the magic and wonder of flutes, whistles, ukuleles, glockenspiels, and lyricless angelic vocals. Jen’s multi-instrumental masterpiece will soothe the soul and enchant the fairies within.
“Since experiencing Lord of the Dance at 5 years old I have always wanted to be a folk musician”, said Jen. “This EP is inspired by spring, the step dancers of Ireland, and tales of goblins, fairies, gumnut babies, and hobbits.”
/ THE EMERALD RUBY /
Soulful vocals caress gentle ukulele, stitched together with lilting flute, creating the sonic pallet of multidisciplinary artist The Emerald Ruby. The brainchild of Newcastle-based creative Jen Hankin, The Emerald Ruby is the home of her many artistic pursuits. Her artistic practice includes performance, composition, fine arts (digital and watercolour), photography, videography, fashion design and writing.
A rich musical history accompanies The Emerald Ruby through every performance. Her first musical home was the Orchestra, where Shostakovich and Stravinsky informed her understanding of structure and texture. In her teens, she fell for alt metal band System of Down, which combined with her study at the University of Newcastle, saw her make the transition from pure classical musician to multi-genre powerhouse. She has toured and recorded extensively with The Button Collective and experimental folk/jazz band Vanishing Shapes. She regularly performs with jazz-rock band Othrship, and Psyc rock band Lachlan X Morris.
The Emerald Ruby has graced the stages of the Great Southern Nights, Melbourne Ukulele Festival (2019, 2020, 2022), Bulga Beats festival (2019), The Rhythm Hut and Lazybones Lounge. She is also the 2022 Dots and Loops composer Fellow.
She has had a prolific year of releases in 2021, beginning with her debut solo flute EP/Video series/Sheet music collection “5 short thoughts for solo flute”, a new work for flute choir, Cordelia’s Jig based on the book Anne of Green Gables, and a small EP of instrumental music “Folksy Dreams Volume 1”. 2022 is shaping up to be an equally prolific year, beginning with the release of “The end of Torpor” a duet for flute and cello, which was fully crowdfunded, then toured around NSW. In September The Emerald Ruby will release the long-awaited follow-up to the Folksy Dreams Series, Part 2.
/ DEEPSEA LIGHTS /
Blue Mountains-based duo, Deepsea Lights, create downbeat folk electronica with a trip-hop edge. Moving between simple folk songs to fully fleshed-out enveloping soundscapes, they combine vocal looping and layering, beatboxing, spoken word, live instruments and finely tuned electronic sounds to keep their music and live sets enigmatic and captivating for their audiences and themselves.
Captivating vocals, catchy melodies, live looping, and spoken word; Deepsea Lights put a lot of focus on pulling a crowd in, and creating and holding space. In 2019 the duo released their first full-length album “The Space Between”.
Not content living in just one genre, the duo dip their toes (and sometimes plunge their heads) into anything that inspires them. Lying somewhere between folk and trip-hop, their uncommon sound can move from rolling bass lines and ethereal vocal melodies to beats composed entirely of household objects being struck with other household objects, to aggressive hip-hop rants, to soft rainy-day folk songs. Stitching their inspirations together like a sonic patchwork quilt, they’ll use whatever they can get their hands on in an effort to get things out of their heads and into the world.

/ THE EXPERIENCE /
Whilst many events promise a 'speakeasy' experience, no other venue in the Blue Mountains does it quite like 'Pigeon Lane', Gallery ONE88's live music quarter. Why you ask? Well, you won't find the entrance to this space on Katoomba's main drag . . . you need to take a stroll down Katoomba's 'Art Street', aka Beverly Place, and with so much visual candy on display, you won't quite know where you're going. Walking past the ever-changing tapestry of street art, rated as one of the 'Top 10 Things to Do in Katoomba' according to TripAdvisor, you need to find a green door at the rear of the gallery. Don't expect a big neon sign or a grand entryway though - it helps to bring someone who has been here before and keep your eyes peeled. Once you cross the threshold, you will pass through a peculiar ticketing booth, a quirky corner bar (although the venue doesn't yet have a liquor licence - so it's BYO) and enter Pigeon Lane proper.
Just like the eclectic underground venues of Paris or New York, this space has antique chandeliers, timber floors and exposed brick, a small stage framed with red velvet curtains, individual tables, and plenty of artwork and vintage curiosities everywhere to pique your roving interest. The acoustics in this space are divine and the vibe casual, which is the perfect storm for bringing out engaging and emotive performances out of every musician that graces this stage. With the likes of Steve Kilbey (The Church), Jak Housden (The Whitlams), Eugene 'Hideaway' Bridges, Lloyd Swanton (The Necks), Sandy Evans (10 Part Invention), Paul Cutlan, Gary Daley, Trish Delaney-Brown (The Idea of North), George Washingmachine, James Greening and many more having played in this room, the quality of music is second to none. You won't want to miss a show here as there aren't many rooms like this.
>>> To find Pigeon Lane, walk down Beverly Place in Katoomba, aka Art Street, and look for the Green Door at the back of GalleryONE88 (don't worry, you'll find us 😁). There's some parking in the lane and you can drop your passengers off at the door if you're feeling chivalrous.

/ COVID-19 CONTINGENCIES /
Pigeon Lane & GalleryONE88 are both 'COVID-Safe' spaces and have contingencies in place in the event COVID-19 restrictions are increased. This means that this event is going ahead unless NSW Health prevents this sort of activity from taking place, or ALL performers are unable to attend. And not to worry, in the case of the event being cancelled, every patron will get a full refund without needing to ask. We know that many events have given their patrons a credit when an event has been postponed - we won't do that, so you've got no reason not to book 😀.

/ THE MEAL /
Victor Peralta is both a celebrated artist and an executive cook, who will be curating a dining experience like no other. For this show, Gallery ONE88 will be serving each guest a platter of mixed pinchos. A traditional dish from the North of Spain closely resembling 'tapas', 'pinchos' are usually eaten in bars or taverns as a small snack while hanging out with friends or relatives. Thus, they have a strong socializing component and in the Basque country and Navarre, they are usually regarded as a cornerstone of local culture and society. Dessert, tea, and coffee will also be available to purchase on the night.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
/ REFRESHMENTS & LICENSING /
Pigeon Lane is currently BYO only, however, has a dedicated cafe during the day and has an extensive range of non-alcoholic beverages, as well as fresh espresso coffee from Blue Mountains Coffee Roasters. If you're in the mood for a little dessert, Pigeon Lane has also got you covered!
