TuneNoiseTune 6: Umbra & Borring/Carlton/Chin/Pedersen

TuneNoiseTune is a bimonthly series for avant-garde jazz and improvised collaborations, presented by the Perth Jazz Society and exploratory music label Tone List. The sixth concert in the series hosts two new collaborations, including an ensemble that will play for the first time together on-stage. Held at the four5nine Bar on March 1, doors open at 7pm for a 7:30pm start. Tickets are available via The Rosemount Hotel, with pay-what-you-can tickets (suggested $30/$20/$10).

Trumpeters Craig Pedersen and Jessica Carlton and guitarists Alexis Chin and Kristian Borring all hail from different corners of improvised music, playing contemporary jazz, avant-garde classical and experimental music alike. At TuneNoiseTune 6 they will play on stage for the first time in a freely improvised quartet, making their diverse languages work together in real time. Previous Tone List concerts using this first-meeting format have been credited with kickstarting incredible local bands Grievous Bodily Calm and Pale Ribbons Tossed Into the Dark - so all kinds of things are possible here, and the combined skill of the musicians ensures something committed and thrilling.

Umbra is a collaboration between guitarist Dom Barrett (orphans, Mossy Fogg), drummer Pete Evans (Number Junkie, Rif Mountain) and vocalist Holli Scott (The Rush Hour Circus). Active as bandleaders and ensemble players in projects between jazz, rock and improvisation, this brand new trio explores atmosphere and texture with a stripped-back instrumentation.

TuneNoiseTune is a co-presentation of Tone List and the Perth Jazz Society, and is proudly supported by the Western Australian Government through the Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries, and through the generosity of Carl Erbrich. Tone List and the Perth Jazz Society acknowledge the Whadjuk Noongar people as the custodians of the land on which we live and work and pay respects to Elders and custodians past, present & emerging.
