Solo project of drummer/percussionist & electronic music producer, Holly Conner.
Live sets combine industrial and experimental tracks with samples, effects, heavy drums and driving rhythms; balanced with beautiful amorphous sound-worlds, made through looping and textural percussion.
ilex’s music draws inspiration from Japanese sci-fi, techno, drone music, and experimental sound art. Combining her eclectic influences, versatility as an instrumentalist, and production skills, she is fast creating her own unique and distinctive brand of percussion-meets-electronic music.
As ilex, Holly has performed solo live sets supporting DJs such as Tzusing, industrial/punk/noise group Behind You; and in 2022, has performed at the Sydney Opera House Studio as a Freedman Fellowship Finalist; at the Sydney Biennale Art After Dark Series; and at local Sydney electronic series Vitalise.
Ilex's debut EP, Visions of Elsewhere, was released in 2021. The EP explores the softer, less traditional, and textural sides of percussion; featuring samples of gongs, traditional drums and temple blocks; warped with effects and heightened with celestial synths.
Also a free-lance drummer, she has performed throughout Australia and Europe with artists such as Lupa J, Holly Throsby, and Microfiche; and is just as at home playing electronic pop with producers, or belting the drums in indie rock bands; as she is in the worlds of film music, free jazz and experimental performance art.
