Rutherford Jazz Trio (RJT) is a defiant band, in many senses of the word. The fierce 5-piece Meanjin funk lineup joyfully deposits electrifying riffs and rhythms upon unsuspecting audiences, living beyond not only its nomenclature, but genre boundaries as well. Best described, RJT is a curious late night concoction blending the enchanting groovidge of Santana, the infectious fun-loving attitude of The Cat Empire, and the face twisting bass lines found deep in the drawer of Herbie Hancock's leftover hits. Vocally, they deliver catchy melody alongside dynamic rap delivery, always delivered with a wink and best served scalding hot. Playing with themes of political satire and well cooked character comedy packaged by world class instrumentation, RJT is one to watch.
Having taken Woodford Folk Festival by storm in late '24, RJT now turns its eye to a new, thrilling E.P project, slated to hit stages and streaming in 2026. We hope to see you soon - deep in the night and in a state of fathomless groove.
