Tom worked as a professional musician and bandleader in Detroit with many groups until 1984 when he moved to New Orleans to play in the Banu Gibson Band. He has also worked in New Orleans with many other bands including Jacques Gauthe's Creole Rice Jazz Band, The Sensation Jazz Band, John Gill's Novelty Orchestra of New Orleans, The New Orleans Classic Jazz Orchestra, New Leviathan Oriental Fox Trot Orch, Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble, Silver Leaf Jazz Band, The New Orleans Jazz Vipers, St Louis Slim and the Frenchmen St Jug Band, John Parker Trio, George Finola's Chosen Few, and many others.
Today, he plays with his own Tom Saunders and the Tomcats, a band he founded in 2010. He has toured extensively with many bands and shows worldwide. He continues performing in New Orleans in many bands including the Steamboat Stompers on the Steamboat Natchez, and The Shotgun Jazz Band.
